Dave Roberts: The Steal That Helped End Boston Red Sox 86-Year World Series Drought

A Legendary Moment in Baseball History

On October 18, 2004, Dave Roberts etched his name into baseball folklore with a legendary stolen base in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. The Red Sox were trailing the Yankees 3-0 in the series and desperately needed a spark.

The Trade That Changed Everything

Just months earlier, on July 31, 2004, the Red Sox had made an unheralded move to acquire Roberts from the Dodgers for minor league outfielder Henri Stanley. Roberts had played in 45 games for the Red Sox and hit .256, but his speed and instincts on the basepaths were invaluable.

The Steal That Sparked a Comeback

In the bottom of the ninth inning of Game 4, with the Red Sox trailing 4-3, Roberts was sent in to pinch run for Kevin Millar. With two outs and David Ortiz on first base, Roberts stole second base. The steal rattled Yankees pitcher Mariano Rivera and set up Ortiz to score the tying run on a single by Bill Mueller.

The Rest is History

The Red Sox went on to win Game 4 and eventually the ALCS, advancing to the World Series for the first time since 1986. After beating the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series, the Red Sox ended their 86-year championship drought.

A Lasting Legacy

Dave Roberts' stolen base in Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS remains one of the most iconic moments in baseball history. It was a moment that sparked a remarkable comeback and helped end a historic championship drought. His legacy as a clutch player and his unwavering determination continue to inspire fans and players alike.
