MSFT: A Detailed Look at Microsoft's Stock Symbol and DHCP Interactions

What is MSFT?

MSFT is the stock symbol for Microsoft Corporation, a leading technology company known for its operating systems, productivity software, and cloud computing services.

DHCP and Client-Side Features

In the context of networking, DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) is a protocol that assigns IP addresses and other network configuration parameters to devices connected to a network. When a device connects to a DHCP-enabled router, it sends a request to obtain these parameters. The router then responds with a lease of network information, including the device's IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway.

In Windows 10, the Vendor Class Identifier (VCI) is set to "MSFT 50" for DHCP Option 55. This VCI is used by Microsoft Windows 10 devices to identify themselves to the DHCP server during the DHCP negotiation process.

MSFT 50 on Asus and Other Routers

Some Asus routers and other similar routers may display the option "MSFT 50" when a Windows 10 device is connected. This indicates that the device has sent a DHCP request with a VCI of "MSFT 50" and has been assigned an IP address by the router.

Additionally, some devices may show up as "MSFT 50 XBOX" in the DHCP lease list. This is because Xbox devices, which are also manufactured by Microsoft, use the same VCI as Windows 10 devices.

Monitoring DHCP Interactions with Wireshark

Wireshark is a network protocol analyzer that can be used to monitor and analyze network traffic, including DHCP interactions. By capturing and examining DHCP packets, network administrators can gain insights into how devices are obtaining IP addresses and other network configuration parameters.
